DeFi lost 48% of its total value locked in a year. It kept every stablecoin dollar.
Those facts describe one market. On 7 October 2025 DeFi held $171.0 billion in total value locked (TVL), according to DefiLlama. On 26 October 2026 it held $88.1 billion. Stablecoin supply barely moved: $302.3 billion now against $303.7 billion on 1 January.
TVL was the number everyone quoted. Stablecoins were the number that mattered.
Most DeFi trends lists rank narratives by how loud they were on stage. This report follows the money: where capital went, who kept the revenue, which protocols moved, and what that means for a launch in 2027. It is for founders and growth leads. It is not token advice.
| Key takeaways • Dollars stayed, deposits left. TVL fell from $171.0B to $88.1B while stablecoin supply held near $303B. • Two issuers keep most of the income. Tether and Circle kept $735M of the $1.25B of onchain revenue DefiLlama tracked in the last 30 days. • Capital and income are in different places. Lido, Aave V3 and Morpho hold $50B of TVL. Together the first two kept under $8M of revenue in 30 days. • Perps took the volume. Spot DEX volume fell 38% year to date, while Hyperliquid alone reports perps volume close to all spot DEXs combined. • Rules now test control, not labels. FATF reports 132 of 143 jurisdictions have not applied its crypto rule to DeFi, and the US CLARITY Act failed a Senate cloture vote on 15 Sept 2026. |
