Lighter did about $232 billion of perpetual volume in December 2025, the month its token launched. By May 2026 it was doing about $39 billion a month (CoinPerps, citing DefiLlama).
Same exchange, same zero-fee model, same order book. What changed was the incentive: points farming ended, and 83 percent of the volume left with it.
That’s not a failure story. Lighter still ranks among the top perp venues and booked about $45 million in revenue over a year. It’s a measurement story, because most of what looked like growth was rented.
Any exchange can buy a season of volume with points and rebates. Building a trader base that is still trading after the snapshot is the part most teams never plan.
This is written for growth leads at exchanges that already have a working product and a liquidity partner, and now need traders who stay. If you’re still deciding what the product category is, start with what a perp DEX is.
This Surgence Labs guide covers the 2026 market, why traders switch venues, a six-channel acquisition stack, incentive designs that survive farming, retention after the airdrop, the metrics and reporting rules that keep volume honest, the regulatory lines on who you can market to, and a 90-day plan.
