What they cost in 2026. Roughly $300 to $1,500 per post at 5K to 25K followers, rising to $20,000 to $150,000 plus at 500K plus on X, with effective CPMs clustering at $20 to $150 across every tier.

What actually works. Only 6% of branded creator content delivers both strong engagement and meaningful brand building. Selection rigor is the whole game.

The single biggest 2026 change. The InfoFi model of paying people to post, measured by mindshare, ended on 15 January 2026 when X stopped allowing apps that reward posting.

Crypto influencer marketing has matured into a measurable, ROI-driven discipline, largely because traditional ad restrictions still limit what many platforms will allow.

As a result, creators on X, YouTube, and Telegram have become primary distribution rails for reaching crypto-native audiences, and brands are increasingly partnering with niche micro-influencers over celebrities to prioritize authenticity and community trust.

What that is worth is more nuanced than the multiples often quoted in this space. The most rigorous study available, the IPA’s analysis of 220 campaigns across 144 brands, 36 sectors, and 28 markets, found influencer marketing delivers a short-term ROI index of 99 against linear TV’s 97 and paid social’s 86, with an all-channel average of 100. Roughly at parity in the short term, not a multiple.

The advantage is in the long game. Over 18 UK campaigns measured long term, influencer scored 151 against paid social’s 77, with the greatest long-term multiplier of any channel at 3.35, ahead of linear TV. Influencer marketing is not a short-term conversion hack. It is the highest-compounding channel available, which is the right shape for a token launch or an ecosystem play where mindshare accumulates over quarters.

The catch is execution quality. Kantar analyzed more than 15,000 branded creator assets across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts and found that only 6% delivered both strong audience engagement and meaningful brand building, with 27% reaching medium to high on both. Roughly nineteen in twenty branded creator posts fail at one or the other.

That is the case for spending on selection and briefing rather than on volume. The channel works. Most campaigns inside it do not.

Influence shows up in behavior before it shows up in sentiment. Edelman’s 2026 Trust Barometer special report found that 62% of people follow content creators, and among those, 37% tried a brand or product for the first time, and 29% began trusting a brand in the previous six months, from fieldwork across 17,688 respondents in 15 countries.

Purchase influence is well established. Sprout Social reports 86% of consumers made at least one influencer-inspired purchase annually and 49% purchase at least monthly because of influencer posts, while a more conservative reading from the National Advertising Division puts it at 58% of consumers over 18. The spread between those two figures is instructive. Purchase influence is real and large, but how you measure it moves the number by nearly 30 points.

The counterweight matters just as much, and most guides omit it. 26% of consumers actively distrust influencer marketing, against 11% for advertising overall. Influencers are not universally trusted. They are trusted conditionally, and disclosure is the condition. 64% of consumers distrust influencers who lack transparency about brand relationships, and 70% react negatively on discovering an undisclosed payment.

For Web3 projects, where skepticism about scams and rug pulls runs high, that conditional trust is the entire asset. It is also the thing a single badly disclosed campaign destroys.

Selecting the right influencer starts with understanding their tier. Different tiers trade off between reach and engagement. The broader influencer marketing field typically divides creators into four categories.

The old rule has broken, and it changes how you build a roster. The conventional wisdom that engagement falls steadily as follower count rises still holds on Instagram Reels, where it nearly halves from nano to mega. On TikTok, it has effectively flattened: 8.1% at nano against 7.6% at mega. Reach on TikTok no longer costs you engagement.

Two further data points are worth having. Nano influencers on TikTok average 10.3% engagement, and 6.23% on Instagram. And the supply is overwhelmingly at the bottom of the pyramid, with nano accounts representing 75.9% of Instagram influencers and 87.7% of all TikTok influencers.

A necessary caveat on X. There is no published influencer-level engagement benchmark for X, and specifically, none for crypto. All-industry brand account medians put X at 0.03%, but those are company accounts rather than creators, and the two are not comparable. Any precise crypto influencer engagement rate you see quoted is describing something that has never been measured by a credible research firm. Benchmark against the specific accounts you are considering.

For many Web3 campaigns, micro and mid influencers offer the sweet spot. Nano influencers, despite their small size, are powerful for community seeding and ambassador programs.

For about eighteen months, crypto had something no other marketing vertical had: a working attention market. Platforms like Kaito and Cookie tracked mindshare, meaning how much of the conversation about a topic a given account actually owned, and paid creators in tokens for earning it. For the first time, KOL selection had a merit-based signal that was not follower count.

That model ended in the afternoon.

On 15 January 2026, X revised its developer API policies to no longer allow apps that reward users for posting, and revoked API access for the apps doing so. Kaito announced within hours that it would sunset Yaps and its incentivized leaderboards. Cookie closed Snaps and its active creator activities the same day. What is gone is the ability to farm it. If your campaign design assumed you could seed a leaderboard and let incentives handle distribution, that route is closed.

• Check mutual connections and community overlap: Access mutual connections and ensure the influencer’s audience overlaps with your target market. If your peers follow the influencer, it’s a positive sign.
• Analyze audience growth: Sudden spikes in follower counts may indicate purchased followers. Social Blade reveals unnatural growth patterns, though note it tracks public statistics rather than detecting fraud.
• Use third-party verification tools: The crypto-native starting point is Sorsa, formerly TweetScout, now at sorsa.io, which scores an account by how many influential crypto people, projects, and VC-linked accounts follow it, and estimates what share of followers look automated. Its published methodology flags accounts on account age, follower ratio, tweet and like counts, avatar presence, bio completeness, and username patterns, recommending you treat three or more triggered signals as a flag and compute a contamination rate across a sample.
• Build a stack rather than relying on one tool: HypeAuditor and Modash are the strongest cross-platform options for fraud detection. cookie.fun covers mindshare and top-voice discovery. Bubblemaps handles wallet-side verification.
• Know the scale of the problem: Fake or bot followers account for 56.5% of all reported influencer fraud and quality issues. Disclosure label must be “Ad”, “Paid partnership” or “Sponsored”, or the platform’s native ad banner. Hashtags alone and small text are insufficient. Disclose on every post, because prior disclosure does not carry forward. Require separate disclosure of the creator’s own holdings in the asset. Include a risk statement covering total loss of capital. Prohibit personalized recommendations, which can trigger licensing requirements in the EU and Australia. Prohibit urgency framing, price targets and get-rich-quick language. Prohibit any call to buy for UAE-targeted content. Do not use third-party promotion at all for Singapore-facing DPT services. Include a written acknowledgment that “not financial advice” is not a legal defense. Add indemnity and compliance warranties.
